Perry was born to Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). The character Jackie Harris was played by her mother in both the two shows she starred in on Roseanne. Fearing stress, her parents didn't want to see the actress pursue acting until she turned 18. Perry admitted that she wasn't at ease in the stage during high school, but started acting to connect with new people during her time at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry started her acting career with New York after graduation, performing in minor role in Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry go back to California to work as a stage actress. The Other Place was performed by her and her mother on Broadway in 2013 The father of her Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie alongside her in 2015. Perry was a part of nine episodes of ABC's show The Family. She had a regular role in the ABC drama about politics Scandal which starred her father. She played the role of the younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off series of CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another portrayal by her younger mother. Despite having a family connection to the character, she was offered the role via an audition.
